The musty crawl space
- Spider-Free Zones & Surprise Wine Crates: A Day in Heather’s Crawl Space
Heather’s crawl space and storage room were, in a word, chaotic. Think: a blender full of sports gear, tools, Christmas cheer, and about fourteen types of mystery fasteners, all crammed into one dark basement corner. Heather lives with her husband (currently on a business trip in London) and her university-aged son, who—bless him—has inherited his parents’ talent for using things and then… not quite putting them back.
So Heather called me in. Time to make sense of the madness.
We dove into the workbench first, armed with coffee and curiosity. “Why are there screwdrivers in four different places?” Good question, Heather. Why indeed. We grouped like with like: screwdrivers with screwdrivers, allen keys with allen keys, mystery metal bits with… good intentions.
- Then came the hard questions:
Do we throw this away? - Is this washer important?
- Is this pipe fragment the keystone to Heather’s husband’s soul? (With him away in London, we erred on the side of marital harmony and boxed it carefully.)
Next: Christmas. All of it. Every twinkly, tangled, tinsel-wrapped thing. Into labelled bins it went, neatly onto shelves. Victory! Off to the dump with the rejects—but wait! What’s that by the recycling bins? A beautiful, rustic wooden wine crate. Like a gift from the storage gods. We were planning to get wine boxes from the liquor store, but the crate was perfect.
And then—plot twist—a note on the crate:
“I have more if you want them. Call me.”
We did. We did want them. We called. We got more. Now the wine has a chic new home and Heather’s storage style just jumped up a level.
To top off the day, Heather made us lunch—a pretencious little panzanella. Crunchy bread, ripe tomatoes, olive oil. I felt like a very civilized organizing professional.
Finally, we tackled the famous crawl space at the very back of the basement—the one Heather avoids like it houses a secret colony of woman-eating spiders. Spoiler: no spiders. No mould. Just great storage potential. We moved in the bigger holiday decorations, sentimental furniture bits, and a delightful time capsule of Playmobil and Lego.
We laughed. We lifted. We puzzled over plastic things that may or may not belong to IKEA. At the end of the day, we were sweaty, dusty, and totally victorious.
Heather’s basement no longer looks like a garage sale with trust issues. It’s a functional, friendly, and dare I say, fabulous space.
